Comparing Our Quotes

Discover-smart-inventory-system

When obtaining quotes to move to Sweden we would highly recommend checking your quote includes export wrapping, Advanced Inventory Management Systems and your insurance.

Unfortunately we hear many stories from clients who used less reputable companies, their belongings coming weeks later or being lost/damaged in transit, then to be advised they were not insured!

We would recommend only using an experienced established company like ourselves.

Our company has been accredited to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. We are members of IAM (International Association of Movers), the world’s largest trade association for the global moving industry.

Guide to Living in Sweden

Living in Sweden as a new expat is an opportunity to experience a country known for its stunning natural beauty, innovative design, and high quality of life. Sweden’s commitment to equality, sustainability, and work-life balance makes it an attractive destination.

Here’s a guide filled with important information and facts to help new expats navigate their Swedish adventure.

Introduction to Sweden

  • Equality and Sustainability: Sweden is globally recognized for its commitment to gender equality, environmental sustainability, and social welfare.
  • Quality of Life: Offers a high standard of living, with extensive public services and a strong emphasis on work-life balance.

Residency and Legal Requirements

  • Personal Identity Number (Personnummer): Essential for accessing healthcare, opening bank accounts, and more. Apply through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) upon arrival.
  • Residence Permit: Non-EU/EEA citizens need to apply for a residence permit before moving, usually tied to work, study, or family reasons. The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) handles applications.

Housing and Living

  • Finding Accommodation: Websites like Blocket and Bostaddirekt can be useful. In larger cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg, the rental market is competitive.
  • Cost of Living: High, particularly in urban areas. However, salaries typically reflect the cost of living, balancing the scale.

Healthcare System

  • Access: Upon registration, you’re entitled to healthcare under the Swedish system, known for its efficiency and high standards.
  • Public vs. Private: The public healthcare system is the backbone, but private healthcare is available for faster access to certain services.

Employment and Business Culture

  • Job Market: Key sectors include technology, engineering, healthcare, and green energy. English is widely used in the workplace, but learning Swedish can enhance job prospects and integration.
  • Work Culture: Features flat organizational structures, consensus-based decision-making, and a strong emphasis on equality and work-life balance.

Education System

  • For Children: High-quality education is available for all children. There are also international schools offering education in English.
  • For Adults: Free Swedish language courses (SFI – Svenska för invandrare) are provided by municipalities to help expats integrate.

Language and Social Integration

  • Learning Swedish: While English is widely spoken, speaking Swedish is crucial for full social integration and accessing some services. Municipal adult education centers (Komvux) offer language courses.
  • Meeting Locals: Joining clubs, sports, and attending local community events can be great ways to meet Swedes and other expats.

Transportation

  • Public Transport: Sweden boasts an extensive and efficient public transport system, including trains, buses, and trams, especially in cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö.
  • Cycling and Walking: Cities are designed to be pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, with extensive bike lanes and walking paths.

Banking and Finances

  • Bank Account: Opening a bank account requires a Swedish personal identity number and usually proof of employment or study. Major banks include Swedbank, Nordea, and Handelsbanken.
  • Taxes: Sweden has a progressive tax system. Understanding your tax obligations is important, and the Skatteverket website provides comprehensive information.

Leisure and Lifestyle

  • Nature and Outdoor Life: Sweden offers vast natural landscapes to explore, from the archipelagos of Stockholm to the northern lights in Lapland.
  • Cultural Experiences: The country has a rich cultural heritage, evident in its museums, music scene, and culinary traditions. Don’t miss traditional celebrations like Midsummer, Lucia, and Christmas markets.

Moving to Sweden offers a fulfilling expat experience, blending modern living with a deep appreciation for nature and community. Adaptation involves learning the language and engaging with the culture, paving the way for a rewarding life in Sweden.
